With porpoises across the pond
Specialist insurer in the course of time
Lissabon Zoo

In our series "Specialist insurer through the ages", we look back on exciting insurance cases from our past. Let's start with an animal transport across the pond from the 1990s.

In May 1995, Lisbon Zoo opened the "Baía dos Golfinhos" (Dolphin Bay). Shortly afterwards, the first marine mammals moved in, including "Soda" and "Kobie" (mother and young) from the US. Lufthansa Cargo, which had recently been founded, was commissioned to handle the transportation. Delvag acted as the insurance partner for risk coverage with an air waybill.

The transportation of zoo animals is a particular challenge, often due to their size alone. However, the all-round care provided by Lufthansa Cargo employees ensures safe transportation. Before departure, Soda and Kobie were checked by a vet to make sure they were fit to travel. Then it was off to their new home. The transport went smoothly and the porpoises settled in quickly. A short time later, they had their premiere at the dolphinarium.

To this day, the dolphinarium is one of the biggest attractions at the Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa. The demonstrations and presentations there are not only intended to show viewers how intelligent and agile the marine mammals are, but also to raise awareness for the conservation of the oceans and in particular, of the major threat of "littering" the oceans.
